Abstract :
Rapid progress has taken place in the generation and applicationof femtosecond optical pulses. The impact of these developmentsis being felt in a broad range of scientific fields, includingphysics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. These rapidlyevolving techniques have been applied to such diverse problemsas phase transitions in highly excited semiconductors, molecularphotofragment spectroscopy, impulsive phonon generation in solids,and optical radar ranging through biological tissue.
